Are You Working On commission?
One of my beloved brothers in Christ is a Pastor of a church on the Near West Side of Cleveland, by the name of Joe Abraham. There are a few miracles in life as we still count each other friends despite the fact that he is a Michigan grad. But he always has a way of making me feel that I can share his joys and his pains as he shares so openly from his heart. In one of his recent monthly communiqués he shared about how many people had made decisions for Christ and were taking on new roles in his body of believers. The next statement in part read, “But, I don’t work on commission, just faithfulness.”
I know Joe, and like many of you who will read this, I believe you do work on commission whether you realize it or not. Of course we are all working on the “Great Commission” to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. But some of you are working on meeting deadlines just like a commission salesman to pray for those who are sick and hurting. Some of you are working frantically to share the gospel with others and are praying for the conviction of the Holy Spirit to see those prayer targets come to Christ just as a salesman tries to meet his quota. Others are trying to feed and heal as many people as they can touch so that the person who is hungry or ill will see Jesus thru your hands and your deeds.
Each of us has been blessed to be placed in a unique place on this earth. If you have joined up with Christ and asked him into your life, he has commissioned you to be that one and only unique witness. You do have the rest of your life to meet your sales goals according to God’s calling in your life. How is that going for you? Are you showing the features, advantages, and benefits of living the Christian life so that your neighbors, friends, and family can buy into what you are selling? Actually, Joe does know he is working on commission. He just always wishes there were more days in the month to meet his goals!
Mark 13:34 (RSV) “It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper (the sales manager) to be on the watch.”
