ARE YOU THE POSTER
CHILD FOR INVESTING MISTAKES?
Monday Morning Message, January 4, 2010
Happy New Year to all of you
who faithfully read the MMM and pass them along
to your family and friends. One
of my favorite clients used to start the New Year
by reminding me of all the mistakes I/We had made
in the previous year and threatened to do the opposite
of what I would recommend in the New Year. I
would have to remind him that we both had our share
of mistakes and the value of our relationship was
that the two of us together could do a better job
than either of us alone. Thankfully he agreed
with that maxim and he not only remained with me
for many years but sent me more referrals than any
other client.
Many of you are probably thinking
that investing is a topic of great frustration
and something to avoid thinking about so early
in the year. Some
of you were over invested in stocks when the market
was at its highest, and then got out of most of your
stocks by March of 2009, just in time to miss a 70%
bounce. Because so many investors have seen
their retirement plan accounts decline so severely
they are hoping for their employers to return to
the old fashioned pension plans. This trend
is not likely to catch on since many employers proved
they couldn’t handle the responsibility either
as the government has taken over numerous pension
plans via the PBGC (Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.).
Christian Financial advisors
are not smarter than others in the world of investing. But many
of them have taken extra training to integrate Biblical
truth and wisdom in how they offer advice. Will
it bring higher returns than a secular advisor? Not
likely. But will it bring lower returns? Also
not likely! It may be that now is the time
to think about contacting an advisor who shares your
faith and will help you better reflect your objectives. Maybe
this year is the year to visit the websites for Kingdom
Advisors (www.kingdomadvisors.org)
and the National Association of Christian Financial
Advisors (www.nacfc.org)
and get some ideas of advisors who live in your area
who could help you. This just might be the
time to change that upset feeling you get when you
think about investing. Perhaps you will share
the same thing that my client and I shared that working
together with someone you trust is better than going
it alone.
Proverbs 24:3-5 (RSV) “By wisdom a
house is built, and by understanding it is established;
by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious
and pleasant riches. A wise man is mightier than
a strong man, and a man of knowledge than he who
has strength”
