Freedom Rings
Most of us cherish the freedom
and independence that is ours in America. Few people will celebrate
more than our brother in Christ, Mosab Hassan Yousef! He
was granted temporary asylum this week in his case
before the Homeland Security officials in San Diego
and we can only trust that this will become a permanent
grant in short order. Why the government felt
it even necessary to try a case such as this is beyond
absurd but it is fitting that the verdict was so
quick to come forth during the 4th of July weekend.
Your responses to this event
were incredible and your prayers in support of Mosab
were humbling and encouraging even to me as a bystander
and bearer of news. Even
CNN and liberal newspapers were bringing editorials
to bear on this topic and if you Google Mr Yousef’s
name you can still see the events that have unfolded
around this topic.
The Tampa Bay area was stunned
this week at the deaths of two police officers during
a “routine” traffic
violation. One of the occupants of the car being
stopped was not so routine and opened fire as the officers
approached their vehicle. It reminded me as we
honored our military men and women that our local and
state police, sheriff departments, and all local law
enforcement personnel are doing unappreciated jobs
all the time with little recognition or respect.
This year as you think about
the freedoms we enjoy, remember to include our domestic
peace officers as well. They may not be allowed to let you buy
them lunch when they are on duty, but when they are
in their civvies and you know who they are, pick up
their check or just say thanks! They will know
what you are talking about. In fact, you can
say “Thanks” even when they are in uniform. That
would help to let Freedom Ring!
Galatians 5:13-14 (RSV) “For
you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not
use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh,
but through love be servants of one another. For
the whole law is fulfilled in one word, ‘You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
