INVESTORS
ARE INTERESTED IN MORAL CHOICES
In a recent issue of Pensions & Investments
(April 19, 2010) it was listing
current trends in the investment world and one
of them was a movement toward "Going Green". This
is thought to be a Socially Responsible Investing
(SRI) concept and in fact it has been adopted
by many people who follow SRI theories. Some
providers have even gone so far as to package
their offerings to investors under the title
of a "green 401(k)". The screening process
to produce a "green 401(k)" will often include
holdings that produce alternative energy; avoid
companies that are harmful to the environment;
and also challenge companies who are excessive
consumers of energy.
In comparing the concerns of
Biblically Responsible Investors who clearly have
important priorities such as avoiding companies that
profit from pornography, gaming, abortion, alcohol,
and tobacco. BRI providers
are also concerned about the promulgation of agendas
offered by the Gay Lesbian Transgender and Bisexual
movement and rightly so. But the going green
movement is a mystery as to why it has not been embraced
by the BRI providers. As God's stewards of the
world and universe that He created, our responsibilities
go far beyond the global warming or political dialogue
and seem like a future area of interest that BRI investors
will want to explore.
The proxy season is in full
swing and one of the issues you can vote FOR this
year involves "say on pay". These
will be non-binding but important ways to communicate
with managements where excessive executive compensation
can be laid open to expose glaring payments to undeserving
managements. Also, I suggest that any request
for approval of stock options that is not accompanied
by a statement of dilution, receive a NO vote along
with a note to management for why the "NO" vote.
Many people believe it is time
to see shareholders bring more accountability to
management including Vanguard founder, John Bogle,
who feels "the faith of investors
has been betrayed." Even columnist Karen Blumenthal
(Wall Street Journal) opined that this year's proxy
votes might even make a difference. Is it time
to add a Biblical dimension to your investing strategies? As
a short term steward of the blessings God has given
to you, how do think the owner would have you proceed?
I Chronicles 29:12
(NIV) "Wealth and honor
come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In
your hands are strength and power to exalt and give
strength to all."
